Rest Easy

Death really stirs my brain up. Anytime I hear about someone passing, it effects me so hard. Even if it's not someone I knew personally, I know that there are people out there hurting and wondering how to go on and who will never be the same, even though the world refuses to quit spinning. It's just such a huge reality check. To know that time is so precious and not promised is probably the scariest concept ever to me. My mind wont shut off today. Part of me just wants to curl up and let time pass me by but the other part of me wants to get up, get out there, and be happy and make the most of what little time I might have. I want to let every living thing know how much I love it and how important it is to me. I somehow don't have the strength in me to do this, though. I know it's inevitable. I know it's unfair. I know it's all out of my control. However, I do have control over the now, I guess. As much as I hate how heavy my heart is today, I got to suck it up, I got soak up and make all the memories with my friends as much as I possibly can. It's just so hard to go on living when you never know what going to happen next. My head and my heart are such a mess today.

It's the time of the season...

It's officially fall. I've been spending lots of time (drinking.. haha) with Corpsey and Alex. I went to a bon fire last night and today I smell off it. I'm sick from the changing weather (Not necessarily a good thing, but definitely a sign on the season). Today we turned the furnace on in the apartment. I'm doing lots of thinking of parties, spook houses, and Gristle. Yep, it all sounds about right. These next couple months are my absolute favorite.

My friend

I've been doing a lot of thinking today. Thoughts of my friend, Jake, heavy on my mind and heavy on my heart. The memories and the feelings are still as fresh as the day I wrote this post. He is dearly missed by many of us. He's my personal inspiration to be true to myself and my friends and just strive for happiness in life because you never know. You really never know...

Love and miss you, my friend.

Blogiversary » 1 Year

Can you believe I've had this little blog for about a year? Yeah, it was around this time in May when the wheels started spinning in my head and this thing actually came to life. Pretty neat! I'm just so thrilled with all the memories I've made and captured just within the last year. Looking back I feel very grateful and touched by all the people and places I've come in contact with. Now there has certainly been a fair share of down times along with the ups, but it's nice to let these kind of moments fade away and let the good times shine on. If every year of my life is as beautiful as this past one, I'm doing something right. Here's to hoping there are many more..

Church of Level Tracks

Ever feel like you need a vacation from your mind? I do. Pretty often.

Last night I went to go see Tim Barry play at the 31st Street Pub in Pittsburgh. I'm really happy I forced myself to make the effort to go. So many things just get put off because well.. a lot of times it just seems easier not to? Sad excuse, but true, nonetheless.

I had originally saw Tim open up for The Bouncing Souls and The Gaslight Anthem several years ago. I instantly was in love with his music. I remembered he came through Pittsburgh a short while after that but it was 21+ and I hadn't turned 21 at the time. I'm glad I got the opportunity again and I know I would have completely regretted not going. Sometimes that happens.. more often then it probably should.

It was nice to get out of town. Nice to do something. Spend time with my sister. Get away from the daily grind. The dirty apartment. The dishes. The chores. Dirty liter boxes. Annoying alarm clocks. Try to forget about work. Money. Cars. Try not to think ab out anything. Just enjoy the moment. The people watching. The drinks. The spontaneity. The night time. The environment. The city. The music.

I love small venues like bars so much.  Tim even came into the crowd and played acoustically for a song or two. It was so intimate and moving. A great performance. One that leaves you going to bed feeling all giddy and waking up the next day still feeling that way. I needed that.

Ahhh, yes, music..... this is why I love live music in particular so much. It's a total escape from life. There isn't anything comparable, in my opinion, and hardly anything I love more.

 Happy Weekend.

Baby Praying Mantises

The last praying mantis that we owned laid several eggs. These eggs have been in an old Mason jar for quite some time. I was really unsure if they would ever hatch but.. today they did! There are about 20, if not more in the jar. I believe some of them did not make it but I'm not exactly sure what is going on in there. It's time to do some more in depth research. I just cannot get over how tiny they are. It's seriously incredible! It's certainly a little miracle of nature.

Icky: Then & Now

~Then~

~Now~

The first photo is a picture of Icky the day we brought him home from the pet store. He was so tiny. I guess you can't tell but that is just a small cardboard box that we transported him home in. The second photo is him a little over a year old. That box is a whole lot bigger! He has grown to be so very handsome. It's crazy how time flies and things change. I can't imagine life without these little furry creatures. :)

White Halloween

I have heard of White Christmas... but White Halloween? Well, nothing really surprises me with the whacky weather we have around here. The snow is coming down right now. It's not enough to really stick to anything but enough to put a light dusting on top the cars and really define the trees. Just enough to remind me how beautiful the snow is.

I am so thankful to live in a location that has a decently fair share of all four seasons. When each one comes, I'm glad to see one go and always ready for the next. I do believe fall is my favorite but it is without a doubt the season to get cut short. No complaints, though. I'm pretty content with the hum or the furnace and the pitter patter of little ferret paws around the living room after sleeping in on a Saturday morning. :)

Here are just a couple photos from snow in the past. I'm sure this was in December or January or sometime when winter was in full swing. Definitely not in October! This was Michael and I's first winter together and I had just got a new fish eye lens for the Nikon and we went out to play with it. This upcoming winter will be our third winter together and our second winter here in the apartment above the crematory!

I think the last few years, we have had some of the most intense snows I can recall, with exception of one or two childhood memories and photographs that come to mind. It reminds me a lot of crazy, unexpected, fun times. I know the first year we got this apartment was one of the biggest snow storms we had in a long time. It was enough to knock the power out in LaBelle for a good week. Also, right around the time when my father was home from a serious stay at the hospital. It was a very eventful season! I guess we had figured I had better odds staying in town where there was power and a less dangerous hill to get up and down every day for work. So, Michael stayed with me in this apartment when it was completely unfurnished. We slept on the floor! We got snowed in. We dug cars out of the snow here, at my parents house, a block away from the house, and the one time we decided we would go to the pet store when it was obviously too bad out to go! Of course, I can't think of a winter now without thinking of the roadtrip Michael, Corpsey and I took to New Jersey in one of thee worst blizzards ever! I will still never understand how we navigated through Asbury Park when you really couldn't see what was the road and what was not! We got snowed in the hotel with The Bouncing Souls! We ate vending machine food and saw the beach covered in snow! That is something not everyone gets to see! Oh, and Corpsey's infamous slips and falls on the walk back from Asbury Lanes!

See.. I just love the how the seasons have the power to bring back such vivid memories from the past and fill me such excitement and wonder of what new memories will be made this time around.

So... I wonder if we will have a White Halloween.....?

Stay warm and safe!

Timeless

For years and years, the movie Detroit Rock City and the board game of LIFE are something Laura and I have always been able to enjoy together. I realized this last week or so when we had a little random movie and board game night. It was really fun. :)

It's good to know some things will never change. <3

It's Friday!! I'm bound and determined to have a good weekend because the kids come back to school on Monday. This past week, even though it was a short week with the Labor Day Holiday on Monday, was a very busy last minute dash to get everything prepared for the school year. It's going to be overwhelmingly stressful until both the children and the staff get back into the groove of things. It's both scary and exciting for us all!

Chuckie Stump

I do have all kind of fun posts and cute pictures and things to share, but on a more serious note, I wanted to take the time to look back on some memories.

My friend, Chuckie, pictured above on the left passed away a year ago, as of yesterday. Our little town truly went through a tragedy, losing Chuckie and Jake, two of the kindest young souls, only within a month apart. It's a hopeless kind of feeling. You would think others would be effected so deeply by these events that they would take a look at themselves and learn from their mistakes. I don't think that this is so for a lot of people, though, unfortunately. It makes you wonder, who could be next? It's a scary feeling.

I met Chuckie through my friend, Paul, whom at the time, well, we were inseparable friends. Chuckie and Paul were best friends. They were neighbors and had known each other their whole lives. So, naturally, Chuckie and I became friends. This was around maybe 2007 or so, around the time I graduated high school. At the time, several of my good friends had started a punk band. We spent many days and nights in a dirty, old garage while they jammed. This memory is particularly dear to me because there were only a handful close friends who were around for these times in the garage and Chuckie was one of them.

He, Paul, and I also spent plenty of time loitering in parking lots in my car, waiting around for something fun to get into nearly every evening. We were bored out of our minds at the time but I didn't realize till now how much of a good time we were having just talking, laughing, and smoking and how much I would end up cherishing those times that seemed so unimportant and silly at the time.

Rise Above These Troubled Times

I saw this rainbow today. This is some kind of sign of hope, right? I'm not sure what is going on with me. I'm sort of stuck in some sort of rut. As much as I have truly, honestly, been busy this week, either from company or just needing some down time for myself, I really haven't had anything creatively stirring around in my head as far as blogging goes. Writer's block? Isn't that what they call it? The worst part is, I have so many lovely posts in the works, as drafts, just waiting to be shared. I just don't have the heart in me to put the finishing touches on them and share them with the world. I have to do  this thing with 100% passion or I'm not doing it at all.

I was reading a post just a short bit ago from another blogger, whom I admire, Delightfully Tacky. I am actually going to quote her on this because I can relate to her outlook on blogging.

"I don't want you guys to feel like I'm fishing for uplifting comments or "don't listen to those people, so many of us love you!" comments. I just want to be real with you guys. I don't live in some fairy land where my life consists of only making my Winne look cute while wearing flouncy dresses. I hope you don't think that. I can't pretend like I'm happy all the time and I'm so thrilled with everything about everything that is going on. It's just that you guys aren't listening in on the phone calls to my mom where I'm crying, or the late night text messages where I'm venting to Dan. But that's fine. The thing I like about my blog is that, for me at least, it's a place where I choose to be positive. I've chosen to keep this place a sanctuary for me. A place where I can escape from the pain, if necessary, and a place where I can rejoice in the good things in life. I feel like blogging offers that solace for a lot of people, especially because it also offers a community of like-minded people."

I guess I can just really respect how human people let themselves be sometimes My mind is just in a whirl wind on this subject and I'm not even sure if the connections are being made from one thought to the next.

I guess my point is that people and even things, in some cases, are so very multifaceted. There are pros and cons to everything, obviously. It would just perhaps be nice and if people weren't so quick with their words and they just took the time to appreciate things and be able to be a big enough person to be able to remove themselves from their own situations and take a look from another stand point and look deeper at all the components and be accepting of things.... for both the good AND for the bad!!!

I guess it's just one of those days. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

There's no place like home

A few years back a friend of mine gave me a burned disk with the movie Garden State on it. Would you believe that I haven't actually watched it until this year? I actually really enjoy the movie. I enjoy the awkwardness of it and the idea they portray about growing up. It definitely provokes some thoughts..

Now don't get me wrong here, I LOVE my home now, here, in Uniontown. It's more like HOME than anything I could ever imagine. When I look into this house and into the rooms, everything just screams LINDSEY. It's good to have control over my own home. The 'freedom'. Though I do need some help sometimes and I haven't got too much pride to ask for it. I will always have a solid foundation and I realize this and I am thankful every day for it. It's just that the childhood idea of home is so much different. It's the most safe and most fun place in the world. It's hard to kick that longing. I suppose for a short period of time most people experience this feeling of like.. limbo. I really don't know how to describe it. I guess at this point you just have to live in the moment and accept the responsibilities and motions of life and really take control and create your own ideas of happiness and home. If you can't get over your past and are constantly comparing the present to it and you're too scared of the unknown future.. well... I don't know.. this is kind of where I'm at.

"You know that point in your life when you realize that the house that you grew up in isn't really your home anymore? All of the sudden even though you have some place where you can put your stuff that idea of home is gone. You'll see when you move out it just sort of happens one day and it's just gone. And you can never get it back. It's like you get homesick for a place that doesn't exist. I mean it's like this rite of passage, you know. You won't have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for you kids, for the family you start, it's like a cycle or something. I miss the idea of it. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place."

There are some days where quotes and lyrics just speak for me better than I could ever myself but I'm trying really hard to find my own words instead. However, there are a couple quotes that do stand out to me and I'll try very hard to remember to share them on here when they ring true in my own life. There are some tough subjects that make me truly scatterbrained and at a loss for words but I am trying to make sense of what's going on in my mind. It just takes some serious sorting through.

Jacob Robaugh

A very special person named Jacob Robaugh left us about a year ago. This is a tough, confusing topic to write about.. so please bear with me. I'm typing this straight from the heart with little to no editing.
Jake was my first friend. When I say friend, I mean it in it's purist form. Sure, I had friends that I had become friends with because our parents knew each other or because they were in my Girl Scout troop, but Jake... we became friends because we actually had things in common and because we liked each other as people, in general.
I have several vague memories of Jake in grade school. We were both a little different.. yeah, even at that young of an age. So naturally, he stood out to me. I remember in perhaps fourth grade or so, he had longer hair in the front (much like in the photo above) and had it spiked up into two big, spiky point horn looking things.
Around this time I also remember him carrying stacks full of Pokemon card in his pockets and getting in trouble for it. He was theeee coolest to me.
I don't think we actually became friends until about sixth grade. I would have been eleven or twelve. I believe we were in the same classroom.
Like I said, we were both a little different. This was an ongoing joke throughout the years after.. he always brought up this crazy outfit I wore in sixth grade... It was a yellow skirt, with red-ish, maroon tights, and black leather boots. He always brought that up and it always made me laugh. I don't think anyone else will remember that or find as amusing as we both did. No one.....

This was also all about the time I first got the internet so I remember finally getting instant messaging and talking to him through that. We talked a lot, all night, on MSN the summer after sixth grade.
He asked me to be his girlfriend over the internet. Kind of silly, but technically, he was my first boyfriend, even though we never did hang out that summer or anything.
Whenever we went to seventh grade... junior high, we lost touch a little bit.
We became very good friends again when I was.. in eighth grade, I'd say. I think that's right because Laura would have been a senior in high school at the time.
Laura started dating Jordan, who was from Ohio. Laura and Jordan took turns on the weekends visiting each other. This is how Jake and Jordan met.
I think Jake really looked up to Jordan. He was into really cool metal/goth/industrial music and dressed really different with long, black hair.. you get the picture, I hope. So whenever Jordan would come to Pennsylvania, it seemed like Jake would spend the weekends, as well.
So I got to see him a good bit at this time.
None of us drove so I remember my mother driving to go pick up Jake or take him on home the weekends in the winter time when the roads were really, really snow covered and bad.
Jordan played guitar and Jake wanted to learn. I remember how frustrated and determined Jake was to learn to play. He would try over and over and over again to play the beginning of this Marilyn Manson song. Well, I guess he finally figured that all out because he turned out to be a fine musician and played in several bands and jammed with everybody.

Throughout the years, we remained friends and we became friends with all the same people so he was someone I saw regularly at friends houses, shows, parties, or anything like that.
I truly don't think I have a negative memory involving Jake. He was the sweetest, kindest person I knew. I'm not just saying that, I mean it.
We kind of drifted apart throughout the years, becoming friends with different groups of people from different areas. Nothing uncommon but he still did keep in touch.
I often got an instant message from him any time I was online. This was like 10 years later after the fact of first talking on MSN. 10 years.. can you believe that?
I did attend several parties at his house. The Halloween parties stand out in my mind because I knew he loved Halloween as well. Actually, field parties in general remind me of him.
He also lent me and my family a helping hand a whole lot with cars around this time. That's another thing he was very good at. He always knew what he was doing when it came to working on cars.
And how nice of him to go out of his way to help not just me, but my dad.. work on my car? Such a good kid.

So basically, the memories.. I could go on and on about. I hold them very near and dear to my heart now. I can't help but feel a little choked up when I think about 'em, too. It's crazy how much he comes to mind, too. Hardly a morning or a lonely car ride ever happens without my mind wandering in his direction.
He's just such a perfect example of a positive, kind hearted soul. You really don't know how rare these kind of people are.
It's not just me either. He has clearly touched many peoples lives. I read every ones memories and thoughts on his memorial page.
There's something so heartbreaking about the whole thing that seems to be giving everyone a hard time. The unfairness of it all, I guess, but just knowing that it's part of God's plan and it's something totally out of our control.
It's just something we all have to.. well, I don't want to say come to terms with it because I don't think it's something I've come to terms with yet.. but we have to accept it and make the most of it.
We can learn from some one like him and we can see the importance and benefits of sharing our memories and feelings and together let Jake still live on through us all..
Like I said, it's still something I can hardly wrap my head around. When it happened, it seemed so surreal. It opened my mind to so many thoughts and questions.....
Not that I ever felt like I was invincible as they say young people do, but you really don't ever consider these kinds of things happening until they do.. then it's a total shock.
I can still recall the funeral like it was yesterday. The images are burned in my head. It effected me pretty deeply. I had a hard time holding myself together. Jake's funeral was just not somewhere I had ever in a million years pictured myself being at...
There were just so many people and so much sadness. It made me wonder.. what if? What if it were me? Had I had such an impact on every one like he did? How would it affect the people close to me? What would people remember about me?
Jake's wonderful legacy makes me want to work harder to be a better person.. to accept everyone around me.. Never to shrug people off and to offer and willingly help people who need it.. To treat others the way I'd want to be treated.. To generally cherish those around me.. Our time together.. Let them know how important they are to me.. Because you never know..
This is something that has weighed hugely on my mind lately and it's also been one of the biggest stepping stones forward to my journey to acquiring a positive outlook on life.
It really made me step back and look at my life in a much bigger perspective than I had ever done before.
I have been to funeral before and I have lost family before but I suppose I was too young to understand. I remember being at my grandfather's funeral and seeing my own father cry and knowing that it was something very sad and something very serious but something I could feel but could not at all comprehend at the time.
I feel for his family very deeply. It also made me think about how important family is. How unlike anything else family is... That support, closeness, and love in your family. I can't imagine when it comes down to it how Jake's parents and his siblings can ever move forward and even function as a family... Each member of my family seems so very important and I can't imagine how the structure of things would change with such a large, important piece missing... but they are strong people and I'm sure they also realize how important family is and how much they need each other.. especially at this point in time. They have all the little memories, details and silly little snippets and quirks of Jake's life that most of us probably don't even know about that only family would understand.. and I'm sure as much as they remember and a look back on these things and have the hardest, heartbreaking of days.. these same things probably will always bring smiles to their faces and encourage them to keep going..
I will forever miss his goofy laugh and his boney hugs just as much as everyone else... I will do everything in my power to hold on to these memories and to share them.. and as much as this is a tragedy, let it effect me positively and better myself from it.
I guess that I am just very blessed to have had the chance to know Jake and to call him a friend. That is something I will always have to be proud about even on the lousiest of days I am having.

Jake.. I love you, my friend. We all miss you. You will never be forgotten. Thank you for everything....
