More pets

 Since I already did some large posts on my other pets, I wanted to make sure these other little critters that live in my household did not get looked over and forgotten.


I have 4 hermit crabs. Most of them are from North Carolina when I went to visit Molly. We've took in a few more since so I've kinda' lost track of who is who between all the shell swappin'. The one pictured below is, unfortunately, not with us anymore.

My home is currently also home for 2 newts. My sister, Laura, has a bunch of them in a large tank at her house that her and her boyfriend caught. She brought me over 2 to take care of and enjoy. It's hard to know, but I hope they're happy with their little habitat, free from all the dangers of the outside.

More interesting posts in the works, I promise. I've been enjoying my time off work so very much. Sleeping in has been my favorite thing. :)

Gucci, Maestro, and Lux

In February, my sister decided to move out of our apartment and in with her boyfriend so our little family had significantly downgraded. Like I said, Ick was still our spoiled little baby so we were sure we could give him enough love and attention that he wouldn't be too heartbroken when Hans and Dolby left.

Hans and Dolby are Laura's and Ickabod is Michael's. So, I had been tossing the idea of getting my own pet for a while since all I technically had was my beta fish.

But finally, I caved in and made the commitment to get a bird. I had my heart set on a canary since we had one in our household from our grandma when I was younger. So, off to Your Pets we went.

I came home with a beautiful yellow canary. He is a male, so naturally, he sings. I named him Maestro.

Well, I thought that was it. I had satisfied my longing for a pet and companion, but boy, was I wrong. Everyone had always joked that if I ever came across an all white ferret, I'd have to buy him, since we all have different types of ferrets. Hans is sable. Dolby is cinnamon. Ichabod is chocolate.

Well, I must not have as much of a strong will as I had thought. Especially when it comes to ferrets. Michael and I had been out thrifting at Red, White, and Blue thrift store out towards Pittsburgh one weekend and decided to stop at Petco to look around. That is where I found myself in THEE situation. A baby albino ferret looking at me through the glass. I obviously could not find it in my heart to say 'no'!

I asked to hold him. Maybe that's where the problem started! Everyone knows you can't hold an animal at a pet store without taking it home!! We ended up talking to a sales associate for a good half hour, if not longer, while I held who was to become my little wonder, Lux. (Yes, named after the late Lux Interior of The Cramps.)

Lux ended up to be the trouble maker of the bunch. Well, I guess I had got use to how mellow Icky was. Lux was always up to something. He just wanted to play, play, play, even though Ick just wanted to sleep, sleep, sleep. He has got himself a bad reputation in the short 2 months he has lived here! Hans and Dolb could be quite mischievous and needed to be under supervision, as well, so of course, I couldn't be so lucky as to own two laid back ferrets!

He quickly learned to climb.
This is always a bad thing. A whole new level of things to get into and knock over!

As bad as he can be, when I hold him in my arms, he is a total sweetheart. I'm not going to lie, I had similar doubts and regrets, as I felt about Dolby, but once again, just look at this precious thing!!! I fell in love. Completely in love.

I think Ichabod also enjoys the company. It's good to see him have some one to wrestle and hop with. Lux is a perfect little playmate. A perfect cuddle buddy, as well.

Lux's addition to the family may not have been planned, but I feel like he completes our little family so well.

I'm so thankful to have these four little furry creatures in my life. It has been such a fun experience. Everyone else seems to enjoy their presence and their antics, too.

Icky

Ichabod became part of the family in November. I can't really remember why or how. It happened in a whirlwind. It was another one of those times where you just go to the pet store and you know it's meant to be. I think at the time Michael had officially became our roommate and had been working pretty steady for a while so we were ready to assume the responsibility of another ferret.

If only you knew how small that box was and just how tiny he was the day he came home like this! It's truly amazing to look back through all these pictures and see how much they've grown and changed.

Hans and Dolby took Ichabod right in. They were all buddies. Three ferrets were a handful but our little family was feeling just right.

Icky is such a sleepy little ferret. He does get crazy every now and again and hop around and attack, but for the most part, he likes to be held until he falls asleep and he loves to be petted and he loves all the attention!!! He's forever our baby.

So it may seem like Icky is our favorite but it's only because he's so chill that he gets the most pictures. He's quite photogenic!!!

Who is that with Ick in the last picture?!?! You have to wait till tomorrow to find out!! I'll also tell you about a couple other additions to our household, leading up to Ick's baby brother!

Hans and Dolby

In February of 2010, my sister and myself moved into this apartment. We're both crazy about animals, so getting a pet was a given. Even though we're not actually allowed. Shhhh! Well, small caged animals, but they didn't say how small the animal had to be or how BIG the cage could be. ;)

We were already fond of ferrets since my sisters boyfriend had owned one when they dated when they were younger.  Unfortunately, Maynard is already over the rainbow bridge. Here is Jeff and Maynard, some years ago..

And so there was a pet store in town that had ferrets and the rest is history. No, just kidding.We saw Hans in March and it was impossible to say 'no'. And so it begins.....

It was ferret love, indeed. Hans was our everything.

We took him everywhere. Having a ferret was a complete joy. They do have such antics. They're incredibly amusing. Soooooo mischievous and total sweethearts! They are a wonderful little critter.

However, there's a thing about ferrets. You can't just have one! It's true, I guess. It was in August. I really fought the idea of getting another ferret. This apartment is small and at the time we had 2 rats as pets, as well. It was too much. I really tried hard to stop my sister. Michael did not help. He instigated the whole thing! Sometimes when you bring a pet home, you can't help but wonder if it was a bad decision, but once you play with them and care for them and look into those little eyes, every single little doubt just melts away and it all just feels right. Perfect, even, and you can't imagine life without them. Pretty deep, I know, but it's true.

In fact, Dolby became my best friend. I called him that. He was a curious little ferret, always getting into my business and wanting to be a part of what I was doing. So naturally, we spent a lot of time together.

And so that's how one ferret became two ferrets, all within a 6 month period!!! BUT oh, no..... the story does not end there........
